A Rye Brook police sergeant accused of injuring a family with his car and assaulting a mother who confronted him has taken a plea deal, months after the incident first made headlines.
According to a criminal complaint filed June 24, Sgt. Paul Damore allegedly sped past a family during a fireworks event at Onatru Farm Park in Lewisboro. Moments later, when the mother caught up with him at a traffic light and banged on his door, he was accused of getting out and assaulting her.
Damore appeared in court on Tuesday, where prosecutors reduced the initial third-degree assault charge to a single count of disorderly conduct as part of a plea bargain. Damore appeared in court on Tuesday, where prosecutors reduced the initial third-degree assault charge to a single count of disorderly conduct as part of a plea bargain. He will pay more than $2,000 in restitution, and the family was granted a two-year order of protection — amended to allow Damore to carry his service weapon while on duty.
The victim says the outcome still feels incomplete.
"It feels hollow. He’s not pleading guilty to what he actually did,” says Elizabeth Cavanagh, the mother involved in the altercation.
Damore and his attorney declined to comment.
