I didn’t say it was normal to start college at 17. I actually said the exact opposite. You said earlier that Jax should be a sophomore in college. If he were a sophomore in college that would mean he started college at 17 as he just turned 19 in October. The only reason I mentioned 17 year old college kids is because that is what you implied Jax should have been. I also didn’t say it was typical to turn 19 during your senior year of high school. I was just pointing out that it isn’t rare to turn 19 in high school. Also I don’t know Jax and I would guess you don’t either. Maybe he was a bad reader …

Maybe he had other educational issues and got held back at a different time. Maybe his parents wanted him to have an advantage in sports and held him back.

I graduated in a class of 80 in 2009. About 15 or so kids in my class, myself included, turned 19 during their senior year of high school. None of us were as old as Jax, the oldest was born in January of 1990, but turning 19 in high school isn’t some crazy thing. I would say it is much more typical for someone to turn 19 in high school than it is for someone to be 17 when they start college, which Jax would have been if he was a sophomore in college like you said he should be.

But the kids reclassifying are usually doing it a full year early. What advantage is there to reclassifying to join for just the second semester vs reclassifying to get the entire year? In football it allows you to participate in spring drills so that makes sense. But in basketball or wrestling, why would anyone do what Jax is doing instead of what the number one recruit in the 2027 basketball class is doing and reclassifying an entire year so he can come in next August?

It isn’t only football. People have been reclassifying to go to college a year early in baseball, basketball, and football for decades. I’m sure it has happened in other sports as well. Bryce Harper got his GED as a junior so that he could play a semester of JUCO baseball and get drafted a year earlier than he otherwise would have been able to be drafted. I also genuinely don’t understand why any kid would rather reclassify to come in for only one semester, like Jax supposedly is doing, rather than reclassifying so they come in an entire year early. I cannot think of a single reason how it would be better to reclassify a half year early rather than a full year early. Unless you think this may lead to them reclassifying a year and a half early?

He didn’t say it was typical to hold your kid back for competitive advantages. He corrected you in that Jax (Bo also) is one year older than the average kids in their class, not two.
