Jameson O’Neal, Managing Editor

Jameson O’Neal has worked as a managing editor, assistant managing editor, chief copy editor, reporter, feature writer, correspondent and almost every other position in the world of journalism. The newspapers he has worked at include the Rocky Mountain News, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cedar Rapids Gazette and the Omaha World-Herald. Switching to online news editing, he served as senior copy editor at Global Press Journal before coming to the DailySource in 2015.

O’Neal has won awards from the Better Newspaper Contest of the National Newspaper Association, the Scripps-Howard Newspapers Honors, the Iowa Associated Press Managing Editors Association and the Press Association of Greater St. Louis. He has also worked as a historian and as a writing coach conducting writing and editing seminars. He also freelances writing and editing news and marketing copy for companies and nonprofits. He lives among his best friends in a cohousing community in the starkly beautiful high desert city of Bend, Oregon.

Carla Baranauckas, Managing Editor

Carla Baranauckas worked for 21 years at the New York Times, where she supervised editors and reporters in the department responsible for the front page of the Times website, its Twitter news feed, iPad app, mobile app and Facebook page. She was a contributor to the newspaper’s coverage of 9/11, which won a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the 9/11 attacks on the United States. She also wrote and edited articles and headlines for breaking news coverage of the anthrax discoveries in New York, the Olympics, and politics among other areas.

Earlier at the Times, she was the deputy copy chief for national news, and directed arts and entertainment coverage for the New Jersey and Long Island editions. She edited reporter and photographer journals published on nytimes.com for a series on race that won a Pulitzer Prize. She also won three Publisher’s Awards. Prior to the Times, she worked at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald, the Edwardsville (Ill.) Intelligencer, the Texarkana Gazette, the Pampa (Texas) News, and the Minneapolis Tribune.

She is a member of the board of directors of Round Earth Media, a nonprofit news organization based in Minneapolis that covers overlooked stories from undercovered areas of the world.

She received a Master of Science in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Since 1995, she has been an adjunct associate professor in journalism at the school, where she teaches journalism to graduate students, and recruited and trained instructors for the school. As an undergrad, she attended St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where she was editor of the student newspaper.

She resides in New Jersey, where she spends her spare time going to the theater, and chasing after two dogs and a cat.

Laura Noueihed, Managing Editor

For three years Laura Noueihed was the head editor of the New York Times’ front page website, night edition, where she managed a team of editors and producers. She did the same for the Miami Herald, working with the editors who created the daily front pages of both the English and Spanish versions. At the New York Times, she was also editor of the features and weekend sections, and managed a team of five news producers to create those sections.

Noueihed was a professor at the Columbia University School of Journalism, where she helped develop a curriculum for online news production. She received her Master of Science in journalism with concentrations in print and new media from the same school. She also served as the chief editor of the National Law Journal’s website for six years.

Noueihed loves water skiing and scuba diving, enjoys experimenting with traditional cooking of various cultures, and is equally happy being absorbed in a good novel or a screen full of programming code.

Vince Winkel, Front Page Editor and Operating Editor

From 1999 to 2004 Vince Winkel was the managing editor of Public Interactive, a division of NPR that provides Web platforms and online news content for over 300 public radio and television stations around the country. Prior to that, he was the operating editor of the Christian Science Monitor’s award-winning website.

Winkel later worked at American Public Media as Web editor and producer of the program “Marketplace.” He has worked for CNN, CBS, NPR and the BBC as a reporter. His coverage of multiple diverse topics has earned him major awards from the Overseas Press Club of America, the Associated Press, the Society of Professional Journalists, the International Radio Festival of New York, the Gabriel Awards and more.

Winkel resides in the St. Louis area. He enjoys traveling around the country and is an avid motorcycle rider.

Jim Scripps, Front Page Editor and Operating Editor

Jim Scripps recently worked as managing editor of the Tahoe Daily Tribune in California. He oversaw content for the daily paper and two magazines, wrote all of the paper’s editorials and maintained a weekly column.

Scripps has won numerous awards from the California Newspaper Publishers Association and from the Nevada Press Association for business coverage, public service, editorial and column writing, and for general excellence.

He served as an editor for the Sierra Sun, where he directed editorial content and managed staff. He reported business activities and covered crime and courts for the Nevada Appeal.

Peter Dunn, Executive Director

Peter Dunn has been a reporter for the Chronicle Publishing Company and the Washington Bureau of the Dallas Times Herald. He worked as an executive coach, consultant and trainer for senior management of several organizations, including Google. He has been a business owner, managing two retail stores in Massachusetts; a publications specialist for the Inter-American Foundation in Washington, D.C.; a reporter; a cook; a dishwasher and a housepainter.

In addition, he has volunteered for numerous nonprofit organizations, including After School Kids, Earthworks, the Harvard Square Business Association’s Board of Directors, the Massachusetts Volunteer Network, the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship and the Washington-area Little League.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in international law, organization and relations from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, where he also received a Latin American studies certificate and an honors certificate in international business diplomacy. He is a graduate of the Coaches Training Institute and is a Certified Professional and Personal Coach (CPPC).

Nancy Weil, Senior Advisor

Nancy Weil is a journalist who has spent the last decade working for IDG News Service, the world’s leading IT newswire, where she is currently Assistant News Editor. She edits the weekly staff column, “WorldBeat,” and contributes breaking news stories and analysis to the newswire. She spent seven years as a reporter for the St. Petersburg Times in Florida covering education, courts, crime and other stories.

Prior to that, for seven years Weil worked at The Southern Illinoisan, a regional daily newspaper, where she wrote features and covered higher education, prisons and veterans’ issues. She spent a year at her hometown newspaper, the Granite City Press-Record, in Illinois.

Weil has won numerous journalism awards over the years, including a team effort at the St. Petersburg Times: the Green Eyeshade Award from the Society of Professional Journalists given for coverage of a racially motivated murder and its aftermath.

Josh Jordan, Chief Technical Director

Josh Jordan is a lead software developer at athenahealth Inc., where he works on their flagship, Web-based, medical practice management system. As president of his own consulting company, he has served as the Chief Technical Director for DailySource since the site’s inception, helping to design the architecture, hire developers and advise on site problems.

Previously Jordan worked for BBN Planet/GTE Internetworking/Genuity/Level 3, where he wrote tools to help manage the company’s data centers and Internet connectivity services.

Janet Falkenstein, Contributing Editor

Janet Falkenstein has held a variety of writing, editing and management positions spanning the public communication field. Her experience includes copywriting direct mail pieces, sales promotion and marketing materials; marketing work in educational communications; technical writing and assorted freelance writing assignments.

Darling Gutierrez, Front Page Editor

Darling Gutierrez works as a newsroom editor for Business Wire. She received a B.A. in English and political science from Florida International University.

Richard Hudson, Front Page Editor

Richard Hudson is an associate editor of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry Research. Over the course of his career in the academic world, he has published approximately 100 papers, reviews, chapters and pamphlets. Hudson holds a doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Chicago. He spent many years at Wayne State University and the University of Toledo, holding positions such as graduate school dean and department chair.

Mahvish Kazmi, Front Page Editor

Mahvish Kazmi holds a B.S. from the London School of Economics. She began her journalism career as a financial correspondent for a South Asian weekly. Kazmi is a regular freelance writer for various magazines and websites, such as DAWN.com and eHow.com. She volunteers at her local animal shelter.

Elizabeth Quinn, Front Page Editor

Elizabeth Quinn received her B.A. in English from The College of New Jersey and has since used her knowledge in the teaching field. After college, she began working as an English tutor for the College Bound Program, running workshops on writing poetry, assisting study groups and editing essays. She went on to be a student teacher at North Hunterdon High School, teaching English. Quinn has served as a private English tutor in Berlin, Germany, and was an English instructor at Berlin’s Mouroum Sprachcenter.

Quinn has been a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and Sigma Tau Delta’s English Honors Society, and was a contributor for The Siren, a creative writing magazine.

Paul Wertheim, Front Page Editor

Paul Wertheim currently is a freelance writer in the San Francisco Bay Area. Wertheim has worked as a sports writer for SportsRadioService.com. He has covered a spectrum of sports events, including college football and basketball games and the San Francisco Giants. Wertheim was a sports writer and editor for The Guardsman. He holds bachelor’s degrees in creative writing and English literature from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.

Sevim Yolacti, Front Page Editor

Sevim Yolacti is a freelance photographer and writer. She has over 12 years of experience in the field of photography and journalism. Her work has been featured on the cover of European Jazz Magazine and published in a variety of music magazines and newspapers. Originally from Istanbul, Turkey, she has a B.A. in international relations from Ege University. Besides being a photographer, Yolacti also creates CD art covers and edits CD pictures for musicians.

Kristen Toland, Front Page Editor

Kristen Toland writes an online column for Examiner.com on pets and animal care, as well as writing and editing for several other sites. She previously worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer and was a staff member of the Political and Civil Rights Law Journal at Temple University School of Law. Toland’s professional experience includes being on the staff of a member of the House of Representatives and working as an assistant defender for the Defender Association of Philadelphia. Toland has volunteered for organizations with causes that include animal rights and rescue, homelessness and AIDS. She holds a J.D. from Temple University School of Law and a B.A. in political science with a Spanish minor from Villanova University.

Anuja Seith, Front Page Editor

Anuja Seith reported for the exchange4media group in New Delhi, where she interviewed government officials as well as national and international media, marketing and advertising personalities. Seith also worked as a reporter for the Tri-City Voice, the Santa Clara Weekly, and was a freelance journalist for New America Media in San Francisco. Seith received a Master of Science in mass communications from San Jose State University.

Shahinaz Ayoub, Front Page Editor

Shahinaz Ayoub has researched and reported for RTI International in northern Iraq, the National American Indian Housing Counsel and the Public Affairs Group in Washington, D.C. Ayoub also worked with the Hogg Mental Health Foundation and the City of Houston, Texas, to assess the needs of children and adolescents in the greater Houston area. She has a Master of Arts in international studies from North Carolina State University.

Laura Hardman, Front Page Editor

Laura Hardman is a freelance writer, reporter and editor. Her journalism experience includes reporting for Press Republican Newspapers, where she covered human interest stories, news and special events. Hardman’s work has been featured in Chicago Home & Garden and the Kane County Chronicle.

David Barer, Front Page Editor

David Barer has been a contributing writer and reporter for sites such as Suite101.com and Blogger News Network. Additionally, Barer was an elementary school English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, and was an editor for Bleacher Report. Barer has a bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis in creative writing from Santa Clara University. He also studied journalism and studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Sam Dieter, Front Page Editor

Sam Dieter has four years of experience as a writer, reporter, editor and researcher. Dieter worked as a crime reporter and breaking news editor at the CU Independent, the University of Colorado’s student news publication. He currently works for Examiner.com as a weather reporter, and for the Greeley Tribune in Colorado. Dieter attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he earned a degree in anthropology.

Cristina Petrut, Front Page Editor

Cristina Petrut has more than 10 years of experience as an editor and proofreader. She is currently completing a teaching assistantship at York University. Petrut holds a master’s degree in English literature from Bowling Green State University and a joint master’s degree in cultural anthropology from Babes-Bolyai University in Romania and Katholieke Universiteit in Belgium. She received a bachelor’s in English and French literature from Babes-Bolyai University in Romania. Previously, Petrut worked as a Romanian translator, SAT instructor and a grant writer.

Jessica Chung, Grant Writing

Jessica Chung majored in English and minored in creative writing and ancient studies at Santa Clara University. Chung obtained extensive experience working as a Web assistant for Millennial Productions. In addition, she was an editorial assistant, freelance writer and editor for the Santa Clara Magazine. She volunteers at her local library.

Tanya Darst, Grant Writing

Tanya Darst has held numerous teaching positions that include teaching assistant, proctor and supervisor for students with disabilities, and adjunct faculty member in higher education. She also has experience in the research field. Darst previously worked for DailySource as a fundraising assistant. She earned her master’s degree in sociology. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology with a minor in technical writing and an associate degree in psychology with a minor in sociology.

Andrew Johnson, Grant Writing

Andrew Johnson has nearly 10 years of experience in customer communications and several years of experience in policy development, information technology, software testing and grant writing. Johnson currently owns a small writing and consulting business. In past positions he was awarded for exceeding expectations in customer service, and for policy and procedure. Johnson currently pursues a bachelor’s degree in economics with concentrations in macroeconomics, cost/benefit analysis and East Asian studies. He has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in the past.

Evelyn Lopez, Marketing and Promotion and Community Relations

Evelyn Lopez received her bachelor’s degree in telecommunication from the University of Florida. Her volunteer work has included helping the American Red Cross in Miami and the Harn Museum of Art, where she arranged fundraising events and workshop days. Lopez’s experience includes sales and administrative work. She currently works as an administrative assistant for eBay Sales Marketing.

Amy Loo, Marketing and Promotion and Community Relations

Amy Loo has worked in editorial capacities for Image Solutions and the University of California, Davis Law Library. She has volunteered with early literacy programs and with organizations addressing the needs of low-income families. Loo holds bachelor’s degrees in English and communications from the University of California, Davis.

Elizabeth Silva, Marketing

Elizabeth Silva has an array of experience volunteering her writing and researching skills with organizations such as the International Cancer Advocacy Network and Be the Star You Are, a literacy organization. She is currently a contributor for Associated Content. Silva studies at Estrella Mountain Community College in Arizona where she is pursuing a business degree, and she later plans to earn a degree in business administration.

Anna Miars, Promotion and Community Relations

Anna Miars currently works for the American Society of Hematology as an editorial assistant in the communications department. Laura Moehr has a degree in education from St. Petersburg College and has over 13 years of experience working as a sales consultant. Moehr has been a volunteer for Tampa’s Big Brothers Big Sisters and was the international coordinator at Aspect Foundation.
