Hey all,
I am constantly looking for a solution to my problem. I hate adding unnecessary gear into my network, and I also hate taking up too many power sockets. That is why I would like to get one piece of hardware that would solve all my requirements:
- 1x 10G SFP+ port for a GPON ONU module (WAN) - 1x 10G SFP+ port for GIBIC/DAC (copper or optics) (LAN) - (optional) 2x SFP+ ports for GIBIC/DAC (LAN) - 1x 2.5G ethernet with PoE+ to power a Unifi U7 Pro - (optional) 1x 2.5G spare (with/without PoE+ - I could power a Unifi Flex Mini 2.5G behind my TV which also powers a RPi 5) - The router also needs to be able to handle IP-in-IP tunneling + WireGuard (at ~500 Mbps) so a beefy CPU is required (or hardware offloading).
With this hardware...
Hey all,
I am constantly looking for a solution to my problem.
With this hardware, I could replace my current network setup, which consists of an ISP-provided router (which just "translates" GPON for me), my main router, which deals with my main network, and a switch that can do PoE+ 2.5G and has an SFP port. That would free up 2 power plugs and simplify my network setup a lot. But anything I can find does not meet all the criteria; either there is only one SFP+, there is no 2.5G, or there is no PoE+ support. I know I could run a router that has everything I need except PoE and just buy a PoE injector, but that idea makes my stomach turn.
I plan to either run RouterOS (by MikroTik) or OpenSense/PFSense or just bare Debian 12/13. From the software side of things, I need support for IPv6, IPoE, DHCPv6, IP-in-IP, and WireGuard. Since the Ubiquiti UXG/UCG fiber gateways do not support IP-in-IP tunneling, I simply cannot use them (although they would cover all other requirements).
Do any of you know of such a device? I guess I will also try to contact MikroTik if they would be so kind as to make more routers with 2.5G PoE+ ports.
Thanks!
Mentions: - I found this mini pc from Asus, but it lacks any SFP+ ports: https://www.asus.com/displays-desktops/mini-pcs/pl-series/asus-expertcenter-pl64-d1/ - I have a RB5009UPr+S+IN on the way, which I want to couple with a CRS305-1G-4S+IN, but I am afraid that by doing the IP-in-IP tunnel on the CRS305-1G-4S+IN, the performance of IPv4 traffic will be abysmal, since I tested running the GPON on MikroTik Hex S, and the IP-in-IP tunnel only gave me around 120-200 Mbps throughput (from my 500+ Mbps connection) and one core of the Hex S was pinned at 100%. I believe the CRS305-1G-4S+IN has the same CPU clocked at only 800Mhz.
