Off the heels of my talk at Clarity this year I omitted a few concepts that could have been included but may have detracted from the focus of the talk. One of these was the qualities that make a token truly semantic. I’ve had many arguments in the community regarding tokens that are or are not semantic. So the purpose of this article is to be clear about which tokens are best used directly in the experience from other tokens that can be used for organizational purposes.

Semantic tokens do not suggest values

This is an image from the Mise en Mode talk, which begins to introduce why space is not semantic in most systems.
