As a person who does a lot of things — sound, DJ, bass’ing, solo performances, keys — I keep a lot of equipment (w/ back-ups), but I feel like it is well managed, as I sit here today.
This week, one of the things I was trying to figure out was whether I should sell the mains speakers I have had forever. They were paid for so many years ago I cannot even count. Both have been repaired at least twice. Also on the potential block is a mixer I’ve used for live sound when I was doing it for some of my own bands etc. Again, completely paid for with gigs. All of this stuff is far in the black. But none of it used a lot-a lot.

I was thinking about going down to just DJ speakers and renting anything bigger if I ever needed it. But as it happens, I had a great sound gig with the always wonderful Soulhat guys this weekend. I have known them for a long time. I played bass in Kevin McKinney’s band years ago. So great, long-standing relationships.
They played our tailgate, everyone was happy, and it was great. It was one of those rare situations where I am very happy to be doing sound. These guys are pros. I have done sound for them before. so we have a gig pre-set that lives in the mixer memory (one button set up with only light adjustments). It is just fun. (The only time I aggressively do not enjoy doing sound is when I am also playing bass and singing in my own band. That is a miserable situation, but that is another post.)
So this was all done with gear that I was thinking about selling just this week. To truly get rid of something, you almost have to be using it at that moment and decide it is no longer useful. Otherwise, you are in danger of buying it again later.
Really, I just need to buy some decent speaker covers, put the speakers in the garage, and keep them for when we need them. The same with the mixer: it is a very useful mixer, even if the iPad connection drives me insane. Better to store it than regret selling it.
Anyway, the biggest danger in selling gear is having to buy it again later — after you sold it at a discount and then paid a premium to get it back. You end up paying for the same piece of gear twice.
