I am the kind of writer who always has to be writing stuff. And while my publication history would indicate that what I’m writing is strictly fiction, that’s not necessarily true. I think any writing is better than no writing. The act of creating things you write down on paper (or whatever) is the key.
Take today. I don’t do work on Saturdays, but I believe in writing every day. What to do? Write something fun, that’s what. In my case, that means prepping a tabletop roleplaying one-shot I plan to run next week. Thinking up stuff and writing it down. Entertaining myself, but at the same time…

Entertaining myself, but at the same time meeting that writing goal.
Maybe your thing isn’t tabletop roleplaying. Perhaps you like comics, or you enjoy toying with a screenplay that makes you happy. Whatever the hell it is, it’s something you’re doing for the love of it, not because you’re looking to turn a buck. And that makes all the difference.
This is how you avoid burnout, folks. Hammering away on a project is a good thing, especially if it’s difficult material, but give yourself a break. Don’t lose track of what you’re doing, and don’t stop creating, but understand that all work and no play… well, you know how that goes.
So do something different today. If you’ve been working hard, why not relax with some writing? This can be a job and a hobby, so enjoy both.
