More than half of voters say President Trump is losing the battle against inflation amid concerns about affordability under his administration, according to a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released Monday.
The poll found 57 percent of voters, including 21 percent of Republicans, thought the president is losing against inflation, though the figure is down slightly from the 60 percent who said the same last month.
Another 56 percent of voters said Trump’s controversial tariff policies are harming the economy, and 57 percent of voters assessed the economy as shrinking under the current administration.
Inflation and affordability ranked as the top issue for voters, including 48 percent of Democrats and 41 percent of Republicans.

“This is the biggest issue facing the presidency — even though Trump did not create the problem — he now owns the economy and people still feel squeezed and believe it should be the highest priority,” said Mark Penn, co-director of the poll, in a statement.
After concerns about high prices and living costs under his administration were underscored during the record-long government shutdown, Trump has knocked Democratic messaging on the issue as a “con job” and continued to cast blame on his predecessor, former President Biden.
“Biden caused the AFFORDABILITY CRISIS, I’M FIXING IT, along with everything else!” Trump wrote on Truth Social over the weekend.
Voters in the poll were split 50-50 on whether the economy under Trump is better or worse than it was under Biden — and on whether Trump’s policies are making the U.S. economy strong or weaker.
Still, 55 percent of voters in the poll said they trust the Trump administration and Republicans to manage the economy, rather than Democrats in Congress. That figure is up 6 points from November.
Trump’s overall approval rating also ticked up in the latest polling to 47 percent, after dipping to a low point of 44 percent last month.
The Harvard CAPS/Harris poll was conducted Dec. 2-4 among 2,204 registered voters by the Harris Poll and Harris X. It is a collaboration of the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University and the Harris Poll.
The survey is an online sample drawn from the Harris Panel and weighted to reflect known demographics. The margin of error is plus or minus 1.99 percentage points.
