Sparrows, despite their small size, are some of the most resilient birds in nature. Most of their species are capable of building nests and thriving in unlikely places. They also tend to watch other birds to determine the best way to complete a task before they set out to do it. When I think about sparrows or any other bird for that matter, I can’t help but wonder how they weather storms. How is that after every torrential downpour, unbelievably high winds and the most extremes of weather be it hot or cold, we still have birds? I know it’s scientifically because they are made to adapt and weather the worst conditions. But what if for a moment we considered that they survived because they must survive?
Some of my most vivid memories have been the ones where I felt the deepest anguish. I can clearly recall the tightness I felt in my chest and the burning behind my eyes from crying. And now, almost two years later, if I close my eyes and let my mind go completely still, I still remember how dry my mouth felt after having to say out loud that my grandma was gone. The rest of the year after her funeral, I marveled every day that I woke up and went about my day in the same way I did when she was still alive. I was surviving because I had to even though the weakest and most broken pieces of me wanted to stop breathing.
So how is it that when the sun rises again after some of the most destructive weather events, we still have birds? There’s probably a lot of science for why this is, but what if for a moment we consider that maybe they’re like us? That humans and birds survive because they don’t have a choice? The worst of times has taught me that they are no different from the best of times. Time, whether it’s spent suffering or filled with joy, will pass. Storms come to an end. Rain always stops. Winds die down. So while waiting for the inevitable to happen, just remember you must survive.
