James Gulliver Hancock is an Australian who likes to travel. During his travels he would sketch obsessively the places he visits.
All the Buildings in New York is an ongoing project and this book can be said to be born out of that. On his blog, he posts regularly of the buildings he drew. He hasn’t reach all yet, hence the asterisk in the title, but he has managed to capture many of the iconic and also unknown ones. The book has only 64 pages.
His style is simple and beautiful. There’s a sort of cartoon vibe about the line work and colours. Even the non-eye catching ones have their own charm when presented as sketches. It’s a pretty fun book to check out the diverse architectural styles.
Of course there are the iconic buildings like Woolworth Building, New York Times Building, Hook and Ladder 8 where Ghostbusters was filmed, , Time Square, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center, Empire State Building, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and more.
There are also the residential buildings that line the busy streets of Manhattan.
Nice book to collect if you’re into sketchbooks.

I first heard about this book on the 99% Invisible episode All the Buildings (recommended!). The drawings are so incredibly beautiful and expressive. The colors are incredible and I absolutely love all the lines, dots, squiggles, lightning bolts, etc. that really bring the buildings to life. Drawing is such an incredible way go get to know a place, and reading this book made me want to pick up my sketchbook and draw my own city.

I did an art deco architecture walking tour in Chicago a few years ago, and I noticed that they’d say stuff like "This is the second oldest example..." or "This is the second tallest building that features..." I asked where the first was and, even as the words left my mouth, I knew.
"Newcomers to New York City really want to own it, to make up for all the years they’ve missed living here. My way of doing that was drawing my surroundings, so I could become more involved and connected with my new home. Many visitors come to this city and fall in love with it. What I fell in love with was the density of experience here. This is a chaotic, awkward, historic, and organic city organized on a grid. Although perfect buildings, like the Chrysler Building or the Statue of Liberty, symbolize "I Love NY," it is the other ordinary buildings, spilling with hectic daily life, that hold real New York life and passion. The fact that they stand right next to the icons is what makes this city special."

In this too-short, sweet 64-page book, James Gulliver Sullivan takes us on a tour of New York City, as he learns about in the way that works best for him - by drawing the buildings within it.
At first, the drawings seem spare and spartan, until you actually sit with them for a while and take note of the details. The railings, the fire escapes, the finials and decorative elements; it all comes together to form a more beautiful whole than the individual parts might suggest. Well worth the time and energy it takes to slow down and really experience the work.

The author, an Australian artist, shares a selection of the urban sketches he’s produced of New York City businesses, dwellings, and landmarks. While at first it’s easy to quickly page through this book, it becomes essential to slow down and carefully observe the same distinctive details that the artist did. Windows, doors, rooflines, embellishments and more all take on a character of their own and remind us to pay attention.

This handsome hardbound collection is a bunch of rather loosely-drawn buildings, some of which seems to be digitally-coloured. Some of the chosen buildings are interesting. The drawings in the collection is reminiscent of those drawn by the current urban sketchers movement everywhere. If you like these sort of drawings, this collection is for you.

What a fun, breezy joy this was! It’s a simple concept executed well. Moreover, Hancock’s lovely personal intro to the book really makes you understand why the city, its buildings specifically, is so dang special to him. The whole thing really reads (or looks) as a labor of love.

I loved the drawings and I wish it included early drawings, perhaps with a narrative. The early drawings, for me, drive home the transformation of his work, which is equally compelling to me

I spent an afternoon on Google maps looking up all the buildings in this book so I can compare the illustration to the reality. It was lots of fun and a great counterpoint to the book.

So simple, so great. Perfect for the coffee table. All the Buildings in New York makes me feel like a tiny part of me is back in NY, and that’s enough to make me happy. The drawings are highly detailed but still whimsical and child-like. When you take these buildings - all the famous ones and the more obscure - out of context, and show them to us as a singularity rather than as a piece of the great city is remarkable. Each one feels special. Cannot wait for another volume!

I love this book and I love the author’s drawing style. That being said, I’m not giving it a 5 because I think some important buildings are missing and also I thought it lacked bit more description of the buildings.

This is a lovely book. The cover feels nice, the paper is smooth, and the pictures are wonderful. I really like the style of drawings and the use of colour.
