This is a great write up by Daniel, my partner in building and delivering this course. I’m quite proud of it. As designed, it provides a great container for learning how to apply and track these technologies in a way that maintains the high quality we require of our software.

Last week, we completed our first cohort of "From Assisted to Agentic AI Development," an AI-assisted software engineering course created by my company, Great CTO - Help for CTOs: content, coaching & more and HYPR Innovation 9 weeks of lessons and exercises that contribute to 3 capstone projects. We start gently and ramp up the challenge every week. You start by learning the fundamentals of AI-coding tools, progress to being able to provide your coding agents with tools (including tools you build) and by the end, you are building your own agents that can support your engineering automation. The instruction is led by Don Smith (formerly Dev Academy, now Principal Consultant at HYPR) and supported by yours truly. Two cohorts continue, with another starting soon. 🛠️ Why we built this course The course emerged from conversations with senior technology leaders seeking better ways to support their engineers in navigating evolving AI tools. After extensive hands-on experience with AI-coding tools on real projects, we recognised that while these tools require effort to master, learning effective practices delivers significant returns. We chose a course format to provide engineers with dedicated time and space for safe, learning-focused exploration. 🔍 What makes it different Rather than chasing the daily flood of new releases, we focus on enduring concepts that have emerged from this rapidly changing space. Unexpectedly, many participants are senior leaders who’ve been away from hands-on coding; some for over a decade. They’re joining to better understand the changes their teams face, a refreshing contrast to heavy-handed AI mandates. 🤔 Wondering Whether to Join? AI coding tools are a great leveller. They can help address obstacles such as being short on time, not knowing a particular technology or language well and can help with both speed and quality if you learn to use them well. All participants thus far have been surprised by what they have been able to achieve. In the hands of experienced engineers, these tools can help lift your focus to higher-impact areas, such as making better architectural decisions and focusing more on quality by reducing toil elsewhere.
