THE FUTURE OF DIGITAL AND DATA JOURNALISM: NEW MEDIA PERSPECTIVES WITH PAUL BRADSHAW Paul Bradshaw Interview Series: Data Journalism in New Media form the Perspective of Data Journalists Interviewer: Gökhan Çolak Digital journalism is undergoing a pivotal transformation, reshaping every stage of the news process—from production practices to the ways in which information circulates. As part of Pr Carnet’s Technology, Communication and New Media interview series, we conducted an in-depth conversation with Paul Bradshaw, one of the foremost observers of this ongoing shift. Bradshaw, who leads the MA Data Journalism and MA Multiplatform & Mobile Journalism programs at Birmingham City University and has developed digital investigative journalism practices for the BBC and numerous international media organisations, offers sharp insights into key areas such as the rise of mobile journalism, the impact of artificial intelligence on newsroom workflows, algorithmic public spheres, the growing influence of OSINT (open-source intelligence), and the expansion of data-driven storytelling. In the interview, Bradshaw emphasises that the most radical transformation of the past 15 years has been mobile technology; yet he underlines that AI represents an even more profound rupture than all previous changes combined. From production to distribution, from consumption to verification, he details how AI is redefining the entire communication ecosystem and how dependent journalists have become on algorithmically driven platforms. Key themes explored in the interview include: How AI is reshaping the ethical boundaries of journalism Why the assumption that “data = truth” is dangerous Core competencies of the new era: sorting, filtering, calculating proportions, pivot tables, and visualisation The decisive influence of search engines, social media, and AI models on news visibility The digital cold war and the deepening crisis of trust in the age of misinformation The future of data use among citizen journalists and activists This conversation encourages us not only to examine the technical transformations of digital journalism, but also to rethink journalism’s normative framework—its ethics, responsibilities, and its evolving role in the public sphere. #interview #paulbradshaw #datajournalist #datajournalism #media #socialmedia #digitalmedia #birminghamcityuniversity #digitalfuture #artificialintwlligence #magazine #prcarnetworld
