Ellie’s tweet serves a valuable lesson:
DMs are good! DM people if u want, for sure! But u can also start playing fun games with them in public. Ime this is long term a much better strategy, higher likelihood things will go well. Transition to DMs from there

As fun as blogging and email exchanges are, I suspect other online spaces make the above practices and benefits easier due to:
- Greater network effects
- A much lower barrier to entry
- Almost certainly having your people both on-site and active
- One or more built-in contact methods
- High, if not guaranteed contact compatibility and/or willingness
- Synchronicity mattering more
- Lower incentives for having your on-site presence contain only your content
- Tweets, notes, comments, etc. being smaller, quicker, and more equal asks than blog posts
- Direct messages (DMs) being smaller and quicker asks than emails
Where could you start playing more public games online besides, or preferably in addition to, blogs?
- Social media platforms
- Chat platform clients
- Instant messaging clients
- Voice-over-IP (VoIP) clients
- Forum boards
- Bulletin board systems (BBS)
- Collaborative blogs, documents, and other resources
- Anything else you can think of that I haven’t mentioned here
Instead of choosing just one option, how many can you juggle at once? If you can only muster one right now, how many can you expand to over time?
