The Phoenix Project brings to light right wing money in politics by combining research and analysis with advocacy to build power and cohesion in progressive campaigns to win a just and radically redistributive society. During the last three years, a network of special interest groups funded by a handful of tech and real estate billionaires have worked tirelessly to further their agenda, one that privileges corporations at the expense of working San Franciscans. Names like Grow SF, Abundant SF, Together SF and Neighbors for a Better San Francisco are an attempt to disguise their destructive intent. Often, new groups emerge and others recede only to reappear under a different moniker. But make no mistake, this is simply an attempt to distract. The same tech and real estate interests fund 70% of the network. Secrecy is critical to their plan. Each organization uses loopholes in campaign finance law and IRS regulations to hide their funding sources from the public. Their agenda is to further line the pockets of the already wealthy. To that end, they are willing to sacrifice public funding for schools, rent control, and the development of affordable housing. Our city’s flag bears the image of the phoenix, a potent symbol of San Francisco’s remarkable history of resilience in the face of adversity.
