After last week’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, it was clear that the gloves were off and some countries were not in the mood to play nice.

A number of world leaders were blunt in their assessment about the state of global geopolitics.

Without mentioning US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said

there was a “rupture” in the world order

. In his speech, he spoke about why the geopolitical situation has changed and why countries need to accept reality, instead of hankering for nostalgia.

He also spoke about how “middle powers must act together because if you are not at the table, you are on the menu”.

Mr Trump

later told an audience

at Davos that “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements”.

Was it just sparring on an international stage, or a glimpse of a new world order? What can a small country like Singapore do when it comes to dealing with Mr Trump?
