Organizing System: an intentionally arranged collection of resources and the interactions they support. It has authoritative description and standard classification.

We organize

  • physical things (objects/artefacts)
  • information about physical things
  • digital things
  • information about digital things (metadata)

Good organizing systems are

  1. Skimmable at different levels. Is there a 5s version? A 60s version? (see: information scales)
  2. Transformable. Can the user transform the data into different representations without having to explicitly define these ahead of time?
