Why we love this Switch 2 memory card deal
If you’re one of the lucky recipients of a Nintendo Switch 2 this Christmas, congratulations! Though you can get started gaming right from the get-go, a few accessories can help make your experience a lot better. One of my main recommendations is a microSD Express card to help lend you more space for digital downloads and DLCs on your device.

Typically $55, for a limited time, the Samsung P9 Express 256GB microSDXC Express card for Switch 2 is down to only $33. It’s an incredible 40% discount that beats other deals we’ve seen in recent months, making it a must-buy for any new Switch 2 owners. It also works with smartphones, laptops, tablets, and drones, but just make sure that whatever device you purchase it for is Express-compatible.

Why you’ll love it
Compared to an unmodified Switch 2, adding the Samsung P9 256 GB microSD Express opens up a world of gaming opportunities. With games like Mario Kart World taking up over 23 GB and Donkey Kong Bananza using 10 GB, it won’t be long before the console’s 256 GB of internal memory is fully occupied.
And while you can opt for other brands and models, Samsung is a reliable player in the memory card game, having created generations of durable and speedy products for use in much more than just handheld gaming consoles. The P9 Express also offers read speeds up to 800 MB/second, so you or your impatient little one can start playing sooner than ever.
MicroSD vs. microSD Express
In case you’re planning to move your old microSD card from your Switch 1 to your new device, it’s important to recognize that they don’t use the same hardware. The "Express" title is more than just a moniker — it actually differentiates what tech can use it.
The Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express. Your old Switch 1 memory card won’t work with the new console. This is because microSD and microSD Express communicate with your device in different ways; the latter requires fundamentally different architecture to function properly. The ports may look the same, but the Switch 2 will only allow you to transfer microSD contents to the console’s built-in storage, rather than use it like a proper memory card. While this may seem frustrating at first, it’s a necessary improvement to accommodate the hefty load of modern titles.
