I bought a new laptop a few weeks ago, and it was working fine until it suddenly gave me a BSOD (now black, not blue, as Microsoft changed the colour). It disappeared after a few seconds, before I could read what was at the bottom of the screen. I have now changed the setting so it does not automatically restart.
I checked the Reliability Monitor and saw that it had restarted after a ‘bug check’.
I went to C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP, but when I try to open the .dmp with Notepad, I get this message: "You do not have permission to open this file. See the owner of the file or an administrator to obtain permission."

Reading memory.dmp or mini-dump files in Windows 11 to troubleshoot Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) crashes is best done using the WinDbg (Windows Debugger) tool available from the Microsoft Store. Open WinDbg as administrator, load the file, and run the !analyze -v command to identify the driver or component causing the crash.
Steps to Read memory.dmp in Windows 11
Locate the Dump File:
- memory.dmp (large) is usually located at C:\Windows\memory.dmp.
- Minidumps (smaller) are located in C:\Windows\Minidump.
Install and Run WinDbg:
- Download and install "WinDbg Preview" from the Microsoft Store.
- Search for "Windbg" in the Start menu, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
Open the Dump File:
- In WinDbg, click File > Open dump file.
- Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump\ (or the custom location) and select the .dmp file.
Analyze the File:
- In the command line at the bottom, type !analyze -v and press Enter.
- Wait for the analysis to complete (ensure an active internet connection to download necessary debugging symbols).
Interpret the Results:
- Look for MODULE_NAME, IMAGE_NAME, or FAILURE_BUCKET_ID in the output to identify the faulty driver or file.
Alternative Method (Easier)
- BlueScreenView by NirSoft: A lightweight, third-party tool that automatically scans the minidump folder and displays a summarized view of crashes.
Tips for Success
- If you cannot open the file due to permissions, copy it from C:\Windows\Minidump to your Desktop first.
- Ensure your Windows is set to create dump files: Go to System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings, and set "Write debugging information" to "Small memory dump (256 KB)".

There are lots of things that can cause a BSOD.
In your case, there isn’t enough info or clues to tell us which one is the mischief maker.
I am just guessing. Check to see if the base filtering engine is enabled.

@Ghot, thanks for your reply. I have changed "Write debugging information" to "Small memory dump (256 KB)." It was set to "Kernel memory dump".
I will have a go at reading the Memory. dmp file myself, as I have lots of time on my hands and like to keep my brain active by trying things I have not done before. If, at the end of it, I still don’t know what I am reading from the .dmp file, I will do as you suggest & ask zbook to analyse it.

The absolute best advice I can give you (in this case), is to do what @zbook says. ^^
I didn’t "write" the info in post #2, I Googled it. zbook is our pro log analyzer.
Even if you manage to open those dumps, they are hard to read. They are in Micro-speak. LOL

Try starting Notepad as administrator.
