Don’t let naysayers muddy the waters; roguelike deckbuilder Slay the Spire is a modern classic, and it deserves its many copycats.
One new example is Mechborn, a game clearly inspired by the aforementioned title, but it differentiates itself in a couple of fun ways.
As the name suggests, Mechborn is all about giant mech suits and the pilots controlling them as they battle the kaiju tormenting planet Earth.
Coming from Brazilian studio Turtle Juice, the game’s framework will look pretty familiar to fans of Slay the Spire. You choose where to go on the map, with randomised events and locations along the way, and battles are turn-based affairs in which you use a variety of cards to conquer enemies.
In Mechborn, "your mech is your deck", as it’s put on the PS Blog post. Before you even start a run, you’ll begin building your deck by choosing the parts of your robot, with the head, torso, arms, and legs all affecting what cards you start with.
There are also different mech archetypes, each emphasising specific play styles or specialisations to consider while on your run.
As well as mechs are several pilots to choose from, and they each bring unique skills to turn the tide of a battle.
One interesting mechanic is the way cards fill your hand. They’re on a conveyor belt-like system; instead of drawing a fresh hand each turn, new cards come into your hand from the left to fill the gaps left by the cards you’ve played.
This allows for some strategic planning and decision-making, where the position of cards held in your hand needs to be considered. For example, some cards power up the longer they go unplayed, while others gain benefits when they’re adjacent to specific card types.
It sounds like a clever system, but we’ll need to get our hands on it to really understand how it all works together.
