yesterday i was grateful for football with my brother...
today i am looking forward to getting holiday packages in the mail...
i started reading the master and his emissary... i have only made it through the preface so far but i can tell it is an important read as the matter with things is... at least in my opinion... there is a documentary called _the divided brain based on the themes in the master and his emissary... i plan to watch this...
a quote that stood out to me...
Anomalies are often the path to a new understanding.
— The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World by Iain McGilchrist
i have hit upon this in my movement to feminine expression... i have become an anomaly in my culture... i enjoy being an anomaly because my feminine presentation is presently my most natural and happy state, but also because i believe people see me and it raises questions like, why can’t a man wear red lipstick in public as a matter of daily habit... there really isn’t a reason other than cultural norms and cultural norms need to be challenged by anomalous behavior and presentation... i think of it in terms of gandhi’s "be the change you wish to see"... i have a profound belief in the divine feminine spirit which i access through feminine presentation and i believe that culture in the united states finds little value in this goddess spirit... we are a culture with caricatures of masculine (cowboy, marlboro man) and feminine (marilyn monroe)...
and there was this on technology...
Increasing technologisation and bureaucratisation of life help to erode the more integrative modes of attention to people and things which might help us resist the advances of technology and bureaucracy, so that in this way they aid their own replication. They make us more like themselves.
— The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World by Iain McGilchrist
oh my, if ever the nail was hit on the head, this is it... i think it describes accurately the present moment in human history...
There are, it seems to me, four main pathways to the truth: science, reason, intuition and imagination.”
— The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World by Iain McGilchrist
honestly, it would seem that each of these four pathways needs to be incorporated into an attempt to discover truth... one or another of the pathways may be dominant in our individual ways of proceeding to the truth, but we must incorporate the others as supportive of the search for truth...
and mcgilchrist gets at that in the sentence immediately following the above quote...
I also believe strongly that any world view that tries to get by without paying due respect to all four of these is bound to fail. Each on its own has its virtues and its vices, its gifts and its inherent dangers: only by respecting each and all together can we learn to act wisely. And each is a blend of elements contributed by either hemisphere.”
— The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World by Iain McGilchrist
i like the idea that wisdom is contained in having a multifaceted approach to discovering the truth... i have also written that we reach the peak of our physical and mental powers relatively early in our lives... wisdom is a condition generally not achieved until later in life, after much life experience... modern industrial society takes advantage of this staging of prowess and wisdom... young people are sucked into exciting opportunities to develop new technology their older and wiser selves would think twice about developing... by then the harm is done...
and this point on how our society is favoring autism for various roles in the scientifically driven military industrial complex...
... a culture that exemplifies the qualities of the left hemisphere’s world attracts to itself, in positions of influence and authority, those whose natural outlook is similar. People with certain autistic traits will be attracted to, and be deemed especially suitable for, employment in the areas of science, technology and administration which have, during the last hundred years, been immensely influential in shaping the world we live in, and are if anything even more important today. Thus a culture which already has some prominent autistic characteristics attracts to positions of influence individuals who will help it ever further down the same path.
— The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World by Iain McGilchrist
hmmm... is natural selection being skewed to favor autism in human beings?... is the problem we are having with rising autism due to the fact that we favor success for individuals that are autistic and therefore increase the numbers of them birthed into the population?... a really intriguing idea...
i believe the antidote to what is going on here... the salvation of humanity, if there will be one, lies in disengagement from technology in every way we can... at least the technology that is currently being pushed on us... we need to center our focus on face to face interaction and deep involvement in local communities...
