The first official footage from the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie was released on Wednesday, and it strongly hints at the truth of a long-standing rumor. A rumor that, despite visual evidence, we still don’t quite believe.

The first official footage from the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie was released on Wednesday, and it strongly hints at the truth of a long-standing rumor. A rumor that, despite visual evidence, we still don’t quite believe.
Months ago, when director Travis Knight was still filming his live-action adaptation of the famous Mattel toy line turned animated series, set photos leaked that appear to show star Nicholas Galitzine, as Prince Adam, walking around on a modern street. Speculation then began that this movie wouldn’t take place completely in Eternia but on Earth, too. Which would be weird considering Masters of the Universe is largely a fantasy with muscular heroes, magical swords, skull-shaped castles, and talking animals.
That speculation remained just that until Wednesday, when MGM released a teaser for the film. It appears to show Galitzine’s character reacting to something in the real world. Or, it’s just clever editing. Check out the footage here.
It’s a super fun tease, which kind of sets the table for fans of the franchise who discovered it throughout the ages. But then there’s that cut at 18 seconds from the original animated series to Galitzine, standing in some sort of room with collectibles on display, looking at what the editing leads us to believe is the Sword of Power.
Now, on the one hand, if we take the editing at its word, maybe a collector has a “replica” of the Sword of Power based on the He-Man cartoon series, and, somehow, this person turns into the real person. Or, it’s just complete misdirection, and none of that is true. We aren’t quite sure.
What we are sure of is that Knight seems to have made the big, epic Masters of the Universe movie fans have been thinking about since they first fell in love with the world, and, on Thursday, we’ll get our first full look at it with the trailer. Until then, what do you think? Does the movie have real-world elements? Let us know below.
Co-starring Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Jared Leto, and Idris Elba, Masters of the Universe opens on June 5.
