This week, I had the pleasure of taking a first look at the demo of Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth on Steam. The new game isn’t a sequel to Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley, but it’s set in the same universe and made by the same creators. I haven’t played the Snufkin game, so it was exciting to see what kind of world waited for me. And though the demo was only 15 minutes long, I was not disappointed.

Beware, Lady of the Cold!
Moomintroll Saving Sorry-Oo
Moomintroll wakes up early from his hibernation and, for the first time, finds himself alone in a world transformed by frost and silence. The valley he knows is now wrapped in the icy veil of the Lady of the Cold, and he sets out to find someone to care for him. I must say he sure is brave, venturing into that unknown world. But it’s not scary at all, wandering through snowy forests, frozen lakes, and towering mountains as he meets new friends along the way.
The three Fillyjonk’s Children
In the demo of Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth, Fillyjonk’s three children run up to him, alarming him that there’s a dog out there in the snow that absolutely needs saving. Moomintroll doesn’t hesitate and sets out to find the dog.
Fortunately, he finds Sorry-Oo pretty quickly, and the children were right, the dog is in no state to stay out in the harsh conditions. That’s the moment the game got me: there is so much humour in the texts, the dog was so adorable (even though he is convinced he is a wolf instead of a dog), and the way Moomintroll picked it up and held it close is spot on.
Sorry-Oo is so adorable with its Napoleon Complex
A Snowy Journey
It’s like the elements are resisting this rescue attempt. Hard gusts of wind send Moomintroll tumbling back to where he came from. Trees have fallen across his path, and the snow drifts impede his progress, for which Moomintroll needs his hands free to chop or shovel. He has to put Sorry-Oo down for a bit, and the little pooch starts to whimper pitifully every time. Gave me a sense of urgency!
Gusts of Wind Impede your way
Eventually, Moomintroll and I managed to bring the dog to the Fillyjonk’s that will serve as the Wolfpack that Sorry-Oo so desperately needs.
Heartwarming Adventure
The demo shows what Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is about: it promotes a message of tolerance and unity, which is so important in today’s day and age. As Moomintroll discovers a frost-covered Moominvalley, he must work together with his neighbours to banish the Lady of the Cold’s grip across the land.
Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is set to release for PC and consoles in 2026, and you can try out the demo now on Steam!
