By 2085, the solar system has been colonized, and humanity begins to turn towards the stars or embarks on mega scale projects of planetary reengineering and Dyson swarm construction. We sit at a pivot point of possible futures, where the outcome will be determined by the scale of investments in each of these schemes as much as by the individual efforts of pioneers and entrepreneurs.
This is complicated by deep patent pools, larger than any individual organisation, which hold the keys to the ventures and future technologies needed to unlock one or more of these outcomes. To gain access to one of these pools requires your crew develop and own their own patents, but you cannot hope to compete with the research capabilities and massive computing resources of far larger factions to do so.
There is only one place left with enough potential discoveries that could lead to novel technologies and where finding the right genes is faster than trying to develop them algorithmically: the Earth's oceans. At the time of writing we have only catalogued around a quarter of a million of the estimated 2 million ocean dwelling species in existence, and this aquatic frontier is the last remaining gold rush in this post- scarcity future.
But something has got there before you. Novel biomes with fish that can speak, kelp that strangles ships, exploding starfish and other highly modified denizens of the deep have started appear. As you decode the genes of these near-alien new species you'll begin to uncover the deeper secret of what is going on under the churning waves. You'll hunt for unrecognised signals in the deep sound channel, explore chasms more than 10 kilometres deep, work with newly intelligent species to free them from their bondage, and ally with, parley or fight other crews while you do so.
Colony:Sub/title is a 141 page supplement for the Sixty Years In Space TTRPG and includes a character generation system for posthumans including origins, realms and responses -- techniques adopted to make them almost impossible to kill -- and Ecosystem and Travel Map Builders to allow you to travel through subsurface oceans and aerostats on other planets as well as on Earth.
IMPORTANT: Colony: Sub/title is still undergoing development and this version should be considered an ashcan release and is primarily intended for existing players to get access to rules that were moved from other supplements.
