These lessons on the car company Aston Martin are derived from the book - "Aston Martin: Made in Britain" by Ben Collins.
The lessons are derived from an entrepreneur perspective. This is a 300 pages book, there are many more lessons that are missing as Aston Martin is an established car company with deep history.
1. Importance of Being Distinct
Aston Martin as a brand, is distinctly British. Its cars are closely associated with the popular fiction character James Bond. There are other luxury car brands in the market such as Ferrari, Porsche etc. These car company have strong racing history and probably larger platform. However, Aston Martin is distinct and have its own fan base.
Lesson: As an entrepreneur, can I create something distinct? A company that is unique and irreplaceable?
2. Your Company Needs to Make Money
Aston Martin had multiple bankruptcies. One of the founder - Lionel Martin put racing ahead of the company’s financial needs.
Lesson: Be careful with survivor bias in the business world. Media romanticise the founder who bet everything and win, but we never know those who has failed. Martin’s racing obsession drove the company to bankruptcy. It was also his passion that created the brand that we all love today. For me, I have to play it safe. To do good work, the company has to survive.
3. The Aston Name Was Earned on the Track
Aston Martin took part in early British competition. Under the Lionel Martin’s leadership, the team did not win big races like Le Mans or Grand Prix. However, they have proven themselves in class races, and hill climb. The team won hearts by being the underdog who punches above its weight, being reliable to finish races and consistently improve over the years.
Lesson: To have a successful business, we must start from the bottom and work our way up. We have to keep showing up and give our best. We may not win everything but being true to our vision, we will win hearts.
4. Reinvention Is Mandatory But Never Lose Your Identity
Aston Martin had to reinvent itself many times to stay alive. It first started as a racing team which nearly collapsed the company. When David Brown took over, he ran a tight ship and managed the company professionally. Under Brown’s leadership, the team had won Le Mans 1959 and sealed the relationship with James Bond with the evergreen DB5. Then oil crisis hit during the 1970s which drove down demands for luxury sports cars. The company had multiple owners, and near bankruptcies again. Lately, Aston Martin is now going into F1 racing, reduced its range of models and leverage expertise through partnership with Mercedes-AMG and Lucid Technology.
Despite changes in technology, management, and economic cycle; Aston Martin held on to its brand identification. It is still a British company that is famous for its car’s craftmanship and deep racing history.
Lesson: We have to adapt our company by going with the flow of technology, and market needs. However, we should never compromise our vision and brand position in the market.
