in teo crawfords series foglands, amoungst all of the beutiful heavy fog photos with soft lighting and 1 or 2 light sources.
However, there is a photo of a tree in late autumn without any leaves, in a light fog, the streetscape of a random town with nothing of interest lay in focus but as the background, there are a dozen or so light sources scattered across the image, the silouette of a house peeking out on the right and a stop sign on the left with the tree where the center of the image gives you the background of a mechanics workshop blown out from the lights inside and trying to expose for the subjects.
this, in isolation is not a particuarly great photo. so the begs the question why is it here? is it that it is a bad photo or that i am a bad observer? what is it about this photo that made teo put it on his portfolio website?
i once remember hearing a story, in the context of street photography, they said ’every photo should have punctum". a punctum is something odd and out of place, something frustrating like why is that there, something to make the viewer think.
here it has been extrapolated into an entire series, there is a photo that makes me think why is it here. and i suppose it has also given the series a lot more attention from me because i wouldnt have written about it if i wasnt questioning this.
