Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has set a 14-day target to complete clean-up and rehabilitation efforts in Hat Yai, aiming to restore the city to full normalcy following recent floods.
During an inspection in Hat Yai, a city in Songkhla province, on Saturday, Mr Anutin, who doubles as interior minister, expressed gratitude to the rescuers who mobilised since the first day of the disaster. He said the rapid progress reflected "remarkable unity" and strong national solidarity.
Earlier in the day, the PM chaired a meeting of the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command at the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office Region 12. There, he reviewed the situation, ordered tighter restoration measures and emphasised the importance of inter-agency cooperation.
Following the meeting, the PM led more than 1,000 officials and volunteers to Kim Yong Market to assess the progress of the clean-up. He said one of the most pressing tasks is the removal of the large volumes of debris and household waste left behind after the floodwaters receded.
Mr Anutin noted that electricity and tap water are now almost fully restored.
The government’s immediate priority, he said, is to accelerate the cleaning of homes, markets and public areas to ensure Hat Yai can return to normal within 14 days.
Acknowledging the stress and fatigue facing residents, he urged continued patience and instructed officials to handle disputes calmly and professionally.
On financial assistance for those affected by the floods, he said most compensation payments had already been disbursed, with remaining cases awaiting final approval. He directed agencies to speed up the process, expecting all payments to be completed next week.
Additional support for all affected provinces, not only Songkhla, will be presented at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting. These include aid for businesses, faster insurance claim processing and possible tax relief.
