Thailand is set for a refreshing cool spell this week, with temperatures in the North and Northeast forecast to drop by 2–4°C, while the Central and Eastern regions will see a decline of 1–3°C, according to the Meteorological Department’s forecast for Dec 7–13.
The milder weather from Dec 8 to 10 will be driven by a new surge of cold air from China strengthening over upper Thailand. Residents in many northern provinces can expect crisp mornings, chilly winds and, on high mountain peaks, temperatures dipping as low as 4–10°C, the weather bureau said on Sunday.
In Bangkok and surrounding provinces, morning temperatures are expected to fall slightly — by 1–2°C — bringing pleasantly cool conditions with brisk winds.
**Warmer again from Dec 11 **
From Dec 11–13, the cold surge will weaken, causing temperatures across upper Thailand to rise again. Easterly winds will return to the Central and Eastern regions, while a westerly trough will brush the North and upper Northeast on Dec 12–13, bringing scattered thunderstorms, isolated heavy rain and gusty winds.
Conditions in the South
The South will experience scattered thunderstorms Dec 7–10 as the northeast monsoon continues to influence the Gulf of Thailand, with waves reaching 2 metres in the lower Gulf and higher in stormy areas.
From Dec 11–13, rainfall is expected to increase in the upper South, with isolated heavy showers. Waves of 1–2 metres are forecast, rising to over 2 metres during thunderstorms.
