In one of his best-known essays, Isaiah Berlin mused about how famous writers and sages are either hedgehogs or foxes. Foxes are generalists who know many things. They are versatile but more scattered thinkers, preferring variety to narrow specialization. They reject grand theories of everything. Life is too messy for those.
