Choi agrees, noting that Japanese skincare is defined by a culture of mastery—an ongoing pursuit of perfecting and elevating what already exists. “Formulas are often refined over decades, with each generation of scientists and artisans building upon the last to make textures silkier, hydration deeper, and results more consistent,” she says. The Ideal Japanese Skin-Care Routine

According to Getz, the ideal Japanese skin-care routine is not about having the most steps, rather it is about having the right steps, done with care and intention. “We see skincare as a daily ritual, not a chore. A ritual with patience, respect, and a little bit of love for yourself,” she says. In Japanese skincare, the goal is never to strip the skin. but to respect its natural rhythm and protect the barrier function.

For a more structured routine, Choi suggests starting with an oil or cream cleanser to dissolve makeup and impurities, followed by a gentle foaming cleanser to refresh without stripping. Then apply a hydrating lotion or essence to prep the skin and boost absorption, a targeted serum for concerns like brightening or firming, and a moisturizer to lock in hydration. Finish with sunscreen every morning, rain or shine. Evening routines may add a richer night cream or a mask. “The philosophy is to layer lighter textures first, building up to richer creams,” Choi says, “and to treat the routine as a mindful daily act rather than a chore.”
