Chikungunya is a virus spread by infected mosquitos. Common symptoms include fever and joint pain, as well as headaches, muscle pain, joint swelling, and a rash.
While there are no known treatment options for chikungunya, death from the virus is rare.
To keep from getting the disease, the CDC says travelers should avoid getting mosquito bites by using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, and staying in places with air conditioning or that have screens on the windows and doors.
The CDC also recommends getting vaccinated against chikungunya before traveling to these countries.
In addition, pregnant women should reconsider traveling to areas where these outbreaks are occurring as there’s a chance they could pass the virus to their baby if they become infected. Newborns infected in this way or by a mosquito bite are at risk for severe illness, the CDC said.
