LIMA, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Peruvian President Jose Jeri has asked to appear before Congress to "clarify" meetings he held with a Chinese businessman outside of his official agenda, which ​are being investigated by the public prosecutor in a new political scandal rocking the country.

Jeri, who ‌assumed power in October after the expulsion of former President Dina Boluarte, sent a letter to Congress on Tuesday requesting to participate ‌the following day in the legislative oversight committee that is also investigating him for the meetings.

The request "is made in light of the country’s need for matters of public interest to be clarified with transparency and responsibility," said Jeri’s letter, seen by Reuters.
