Achieving Sub-2 Approximation for Independent Set

The Maximum Independent Set Problem

The Maximum Independent Set Problem is one of the most fundamental problems in computer science and combinatorial optimization. Given an undirected graph G = (V, E), an independent set is a subset of vertices with no edges between them. The goal is to find the largest such set.

Problem Definition:

  • Input: An undirected graph G = (V, E)
  • Output: A maximum independent set I ⊆ V such that no two vertices in I are adjacent
  • Objective: Maximize |I|

Complexity:

  • The problem is NP-hard to solve exactly
  • Even approximating within n^(1-ε) is NP-hard for any ε > 0
  • Closely related to vertex cover (complement relationship) and clique problems
