Faster way to simulate certain quantum circuits — now for thousands of qubits

Researchers made it much easier to mimic a class of quantum circuits on ordinary computers, and the result is both surprising and useful. By changing how the computer keeps track of the system, simulation becomes faster, though it uses about twice the memory. A free program called CHP puts this into practice and can run on thousands of qubits, so experiments can be tried before the lab machines are ready. The work also shows these circuits are probably not universal for classical computers, meaning they won’t replace your laptop for general tasks.
