Or perhaps a museum is a better word than an archive. Calling it an archive would be misleading, since many contributions are already gone forever, to dead servers, abandoned domains, forgotten hosting bills, or simply the slow decay of the web itself. Even with the best intentions, some pages could never be recovered.

I often find myself wanting to share old links from the Arab GNU/Linux community or long-forgotten personal blogs with friends. One example is a post about how Alaa managed to run Emacs on a Nokia telephone. Too often, these links are painful to browse: pages load slowly, assets are missing, or navigation is simply broken.

So I decided to download what I could and host it on a small server of my own. And here it is. What you’ll find is a hopefully faster, more accessible museum of old GNU/Linux–related websites and pages. preserved not perfectly, but sincerely.

It should be mentioned that some assets like images and css are lost in some pages, to make the site readable, I replaced it with some minimal CSS. Images will show as not loading

It should be also mentioned that Manal Bahey al-Din and Alaa Abd El-Fattah (manalaa, hereafter) were involved in politics as well as free software, so the archive naturally includes political and activist material. I’ve never believed the free software movement to be merely a technical or software standard; it has always been, at its core, a political movement.

أرشيف لينكس مصر

أو علّ المتحف تسمية أدق من الأرشيف؛ إذ سيكون من المخلّ تسميته أرشيفًا بينما العديد من المشاركات قد فُقدت إلى الأبد، بسبب إغلاق الخوادم، وضياع النطاقات، وإهمال المحتوى، أو بفعل الإنتروبي في الويب.

في كثير من الأحيان أود مشاركة روابط قديمة من مجتمع جنو/لينكس في العالم العربي، أو من مدونات شخصية تعود لسنوات مضت وعادً ما يشق على أصحابي تصفح هذه الروابط بسبب البطء شديد في الأرشيف والمحتوى الناقص والصفحات المعطوبة.

لهذا قررت جمع ما أمكنني جمعه وتخزينه على خادم صغير. وها نحن ذا. ما ستجده هو محاولة، آمل أن تكون أسرع وأسهل، للحفاظ على متحف لبعض مواقع وصفحات جنو/لينكس القديمة، كما وصلت إلينا، لا كما كانت في صورتها المثالية.

يجب أن أذكر أن منال بهي الدين وعلاء عبد الفتاح كان لهما نشاط سياسي إلى جانب اهتمامهما بحركة البرمجيات الحرة، ولذلك يحتوي هذا المتحف على مواد سياسية. ولم أؤمن يومًا بحركة البرمجيات الحرة باعتبارها مجرد توجه تقني، بل كحركة سياسية وثورية.
