The Faroese women’s handball team wrapped up their IHF World Championship participation on Saturday with a 30-33 loss against Iceland.
The Icelanders were in the lead at halftime by 16-14 and managed to extend that difference by one more goal at the final whistle.
With Iceland getting on top from the get go, the Faroese struggled to catch up, eventually succombing to the pressure from their neighbors to the northwest.
Throwing in six goals, Jana Mittún became the Faroe Islands’ top scorer, and was also named Player of the Match.
Despite the disappointing defeat, it was already a fait accompli that this would be the last fixture of this tournament for the Faroese team. Their tie against Serbia two days earlier was not enough to secure them a spot in the final rounds.
