Between 2015 and 2019, I was experimenting with rendering macOS in virtual reality. It started with a VR desktop app for my Oculus DK2, evolved into a SteamVR framework when Apple announced Vive support, and included various Metal and SceneKit experiments along the way. There were almost no resources on macOS VR development at the time, so I had to figure out most of it myself.

The hardware is now obsolete. Oculus dropped Mac support, and Apple’s VR ambitions were short-lived. But with Vision Pro bringing spatial computing back to Apple platforms, I thought it was time to share what I learned.
