01. THE MECHANISM (FFR)
To understand why compression matters, you must understand the Frequency Following Response (FFR).
The brain is an electrochemical machine that operates on rhythm. These rhythms (Alpha, Beta, Theta) are not random; they are the "clock speed" of the cortex.
The Thalamocortical Loop
Sensory input travels to the Thalamus (the brain’s router). The Thalamus oscillates to synchronize the Cortex. If the Thalamus receives a strong, consistent rhythmic signal (like a 10Hz pulse), it will "entrain" the Cortex to match that speed.
The Superior Olivary Complex
This is where the magic happens. This part of the brainstem calculates the tiny time-delay between your left and right ears to locate sound. By feeding it two mathematically distinct frequencies, we "hack" this calculation, forcing it to generate the Phantom Signal.
If the phase data is corrupted by compression, the Superior Olivary Complex cannot calculate the difference. The phantom signal fails. The Thalamus does not oscillate. The FFR is not triggered.
02. THE COMPRESSION ARTIFACT
This is where streaming platforms fail. Codecs like MP3, AAC (YouTube), and Ogg Vorbis (Spotify) use Joint Stereo (Mid/Side Coding) to save bandwidth.
Instead of storing L and R separately, they store:
- MID CHANNEL = (Left + Right) / 2
- SIDE CHANNEL = (Left - Right) / 2
Because binaural beats consist of two very similar frequencies (200Hz vs 210Hz), the algorithm identifies the difference as "redundant data." It aggressively compresses the Side Channel, blurring the phase information required for the effect.
Result: The "Hum" remains, but the "Driver" is flattened.
03. CLIENT-SIDE SYNTHESIS
To fix this, we abandoned audio files entirely. Phantas treats the browser as a real-time synthesizer.
Using the Web Audio API, we instantiate raw OscillatorNodes directly on your device’s CPU. This audio is generated at 64-bit floating-point precision at the exact moment of playback.
Zero Compression: No codec is ever applied. The wave is pure math.
Perfect Isolation: We use hard-panning (-1 / +1) to ensure zero crosstalk.
Dynamic Ramping: We can slide frequencies (e.g., Beta to Alpha) smoothly without crossfading static files.

04. THE VISUAL CO-PROCESSOR
Auditory entrainment is effective, but visual entrainment is faster. The Visual Cortex consumes significantly more processing power than the Auditory Cortex.
Phantas includes a strobe driver (Canvas API) that flashes the screen at the exact same frequency as the audio beat. If the audio is pushing 10Hz, the screen flickers at 10Hz. This creates a Ganzfeld Effect, forcing cortical synchronization via two distinct biological pathways simultaneously.
