Researchers are trapping and tracking the New World screwworm to detect it early before it threatens livestock.

The previous arrival of the New World screwworm in the U.S. caused major losses to livestock and led to an eradication effort that lasted for decades. Researchers at the University of California Riverside are now taking early action to reduce the risk of this destructive parasite returning.

Despite its name, the New World screwworm is not a worm. It is the immature stage of a metallic blowfly known as Cochliomyia hominivorax. Many blowflies help break down dead animals and are not harmful, but this species is different because its larvae consume living tissue.
