A lot happened in the world of electric cars during 2025. We finally got to test a true “next gen” electric car (BMW iX3 Neue Klasse), and the entire segment also broadened significantly.
When I summed up 2025 and looked at the cars I had the highest expectations for beforehand, the conclusion was that it had been a mixed bag. A couple of manufacturers delivered, others did not – and some still have not been possible to test drive (Polestar 5 and ID2 All).
So which electric cars should we be keeping an eye on in 2026?

Volvo EX60
The rear end of the Volvo EX60. Volvo Cars
On 21 January it all kicks off. That is when Volvo Cars will unveil its hugely important volume model, the EX60. We know it will take place in Stockholm, but not much more than that.
So far, no hard figures have been confirmed, but the car is built on Volvo’s new SPA3 platform. It is said to offer “range like a fossil-fuel car” and to sit in the same price bracket as today’s XC60.

Regardless, this is Volvo Cars most important launch in a long time. The EX90 has not delivered at the level the manufacturer had hoped for.
Jaguar EV
Jaguar Type 00. Jaguar
Recent times have not been kind to Jaguar. An ageing model line-up is trying to keep the flag flying while competitors are churning out new alternatives. Add to that a cyberattack that shut the factory for weeks, which according to Reuters resulted in costs of £1.9 billion.
The brand made a highly publicised and widely criticised design U-turn in 2025, and in 2026 we will see the results of this. It is a large electric saloon, which I have actually already seen driving on a track.
Whether this will be the starting gun for a reborn Jaguar remains to be seen – but it is certainly intriguing.
Porsche 718
Rick Knab
We have long talked about sporty electric cars, and in terms of performance there is no shortage of models that demolish most acceleration tests. However, no one has yet launched a pure, electric, series-production sports car. Could this be it?
Soon it will be time for an electric 718. It is said to be an electric car with the character of a small mid-engined Porsche. It certainly sounds as though the ingredients for a good recipe are all there.
While we are on Porsche, a new electric Cayenne is also on the way, tempting with plenty of interesting technology. But electric, sporty SUVs costing a million kronor are, frankly, not quite as thrilling.

Renault Twingo
Renault Twingo E-tech. Renault
French manufacturer Renault continues along its chosen path of developing small and increasingly affordable electric cars. Twingo is the latest, featuring a neat retro design and an attractive target price. The idea is for the model to come in at under €20,000.
So why is this exciting? Because Renault has become a standard-bearer in the fight against budget cars from China. The Renault 5 was a strong effort – how much of that can be carried over into the Twingo?
VW ID Polo
VW ID Polo. Felix Björklund
We have been waiting a long time for VW’s affordable electric cars, and now they are coming. The model initially known as ID2 All has now been renamed ID Polo, with production taking place in Spain. The specifications sound promising, with 85–155 kW of power and up to 450 km of range. There is also a 435-litre boot – so all the pieces are in place. And most importantly: a price of under €25,000.
If the Polo does not tempt you, the group will also launch several models during the year within its “Urban Car” range. In addition to the Polo, there will be crossover alternatives in the form of the ID Cross, Skoda Epiq and the sporty Cupra Raval.
BMW I3
BMW Vision Driving Experience – a test vehicle in which Neue Klasse technology is put through its paces. Tom Kirkpatrick
Neue Klasse was BMW’s fresh start, and the first model based on the architecture, the iX3, more than lived up to the hype. In 2026 it will be followed by an i3.
The manufacturer has already shown a concept of what the saloon will look like (and I have seen the production car live). It is perhaps not too far-fetched to think that we might also see an estate version.
BMW has also unveiled a prototype of an M version with four motors – so there is good reason to believe there will be something for every taste.
Kia EV2
Kia EV2 koncept. Kia
In January, at the Brussels Motor Show, Kia will present its answer to the VW ID Polo: the budget electric EV2. So why am I excited about yet another affordable option? Well, according to the company’s European chief, Marc Hedrich, this is not about a cheap compromise model.
Kia will soon have a model in virtually every class, and they also offer a number of genuinely fun-to-drive options – so it certainly sounds appealing.
Ferrari ”Elettrica”
The platform on which Ferrari will build its electric car. Ferrari
Enzo Ferrari may be turning in his grave, but in 2026 the Italian luxury brand will enter the electric car arena. Neither the name nor the exact launch timing has been officially confirmed, but the manufacturer has released some information about the technology.
The car will have four motors and just over 1,000 horsepower. A 122 kWh battery capable of charging at up to 350 kW is said to deliver more than 530 km of range. Expect a price tag as overwhelming as the performance.
Polestar 5
Polestar 5. Polestar
Perhaps one should disqualify a model that was already on the list a year ago. But 2025 came and went without us getting to test drive the 5. I hope to put that right in 2026, as the Geely-owned brand says this is a car designed to challenge Porsche.
We have seen the car, heard the promises and spoken to the product manager. Will this be the model that truly allows the brand to take off?
