Hi all,
I just picked up a used pc from marketplace to use as a dedicated home NAS (running ZimaOS). I’ve issues for the computer to detect any off the drives ive installed.
The Issue: The ZimaOS installer cannot see the internal 1TB NVMe SSD or any drive I connect to the SATA ports. The only drive detected is the external SSD I’m currently booting the OS from.
What I’ve Tried:
- BIOS : I’ve disabled Secure Boot.
- Storage Settings: I can see the 1TB Western Digital drive listed under "Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology" in the BIOS as a "Non-RAID" physical disk.

Hi all,
I just picked up a used pc from marketplace to use as a dedicated home NAS (running ZimaOS).
- The VMD Problem: I suspect the Intel VMD controller is hiding the drives from the Linux kernel. However, there is no option in this HP BIOS to disable VMD or switch to AHCI mode.
- Hidden Menus: I tried Ctrl + F1 and Right Ctrl + Right Shift + Left Alt + F2 in the BIOS to unlock advanced settings, but nothing worked.
- Kernel Flags: I tried booting with nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0, but still no luck.
The Hardware:
- Model: HP Envy TE01-3244
- CPU: i5-12400 (12th Gen)
- Motherboard: Reno (HP Proprietary)
- BIOS Version: F.30 (approx)
Has anyone successfully "unlocked" the storage controller on these 12th-gen HP pc's to allow Linux to see the internal NVMe or SATA lanes? Or is this board effectively hard-locked to Windows-only drivers?
Thanks for all the advice/support!!!
