More than eight months after Pinta 3.0, version 3.1 delivers several new features and workflow improvements for this open-source drawing and image editing software. Pinta now offers an axonometric grid, providing users with improved drawing precision for technical or isometric artwork. The canvas widget has been completely rewritten, resulting in better performance and reduced memory usage when zooming in on images.
Building on these core changes, Pinta 3.1 introduces a new Cells effect, and the Dithering effect is now able to use the program’s current color palette or preset palettes. The Twist effect benefits from a new radius percentage parameter. Effect controls have also expanded, allowing direct adjustment of random seed values alongside the Reseed button. Selection tools receive notable upgrades: the lasso tool gains a polygon mode for precise region selection, while selection areas are projected and highlighted on rulers, and the selection outline is now animated to improve visibility.
Following these usability enhancements, users will find handles for adjusting gradient length and direction, along with keyboard shortcuts displayed in all toolbar button tooltips. A right-click menu for layers streamlines layer management, and the text tool now supports Ctrl+Backspace to delete entire words. For painting workflows, holding down the mouse with the Splatter brush enables continuous drawing. Rounding out this release, Pinta 3.1 now includes a Windows ARM64 installer, broadening platform compatibility, as well as several other enhancements.
