The last decade has seen an explosion in attempts to regulate how online platforms—particularly social media sites—sort, deliver, and moderate content. This paper categorizes the major legislative approaches to regulating platform algorithms and explains why many of these efforts endanger the free internet and raise serious First Amendment concerns.
