AI at work is weirdly less about “automation” and more about posture. A year ago, a lot of us were paid to produce. Write the doc. Make the deck. Draft the email. Build the first version. Now the first version is cheap. Sometimes it shows up before you even finish describing the problem. So the job shifts. You are not the creator anymore. You are the editor. The director. The person who decides what matters, what is nonsense, and what gets shipped. You’re valued now for curation and taste as opposed to your ability to create unique meaningful artifiacts that have inherent value. That sounds glamorous until you realize the new failure mode: you can be “productive” all day and still go nowhere. AI will happily generate 12 options, 3 strategies, 6 drafts, and 0 clarity. The bottleneck moved from output to judgment. The biggest change I notice in good teams is not who “uses AI most.” It is who frames better. Who weilds it better and asks the challenging questions. What are we actually trying to achieve? What constraints are real? What does done look like? What are we refusing to do? If that part is fuzzy, AI multiplies the fuzz. You do not get speed. You get fast confusion. Then comes the uncomfortable part: content is no longer a flex. Anyone can generate a convincing paragraph. The advantage is synthesis, which is basically the opposite of generating more. It is cutting. Naming. Compressing. Turning noise into a small model that fits in someone’s head. And output has quietly changed shape. Effort is less visible now. Artifacts are what endure. A checklist beats a meeting. A template beats “tribal knowledge.” A workflow beats heroic memory. A small tool beats repeated complaining. Finally, credibility has shifted too. “Sounds smart” is cheap now. Proof is expensive. People trust receipts: a demo, a before/after, a metric, a shipped link, a traceable decision.
So if I had to describe the new work loop in one line, it would be this: Frame cleanly. Generate quickly. Edit ruthlessly. Ship something real. Show proof.
That is the job now. Not doing things faster, but choosing better.
