I’ve been monitoring stock on Amazon and other places, Amazon showed it as ‘in stock’ but this morning it’s now ‘only 15 left in stock’
I was planning to hold off until Christmas because I normally get given some vouchers but with the prices likely to go up and a possible shortage I hit the buy button just now....

Yes all UK retailers are showing pre-order or out of stock now. I think by Christmas they’ll be sold out on Amazon as well.
My current card is a MSI 3080 Ti Suprim X which I bought in 2021 when they were hard to get (crypto boom) It’s served me well and still works but I’m thinking it’s out of warranty and if anything goes wrong I’ll be stuck with just the CPU on-board graphics.

A little over 3 years ago I paid $1000 for one of the last 3080 EVGA cards produced as they ended their partnership with NVIDIA and the card still works great, If I upgraded to a 5080 today it would cost double at about $2000 bucks. If I ever have to buy a new GPU I will buy a previous generation card as all the bugs and flaws are usually fixed and the price is a little more resonable than the latest and greatest.
Also I still have a GTX 780 as a spare that will still run on Windows 11 and work with what games I have.

I’m not sure how well that works. I haven’t noticed a large drop in prices of an old generation when a new one comes to market.
But the GPU market changed during the COVID epidemic. I don’t think it ever returned to what I regarded as normal.
It’s almost surprising that nVidia has remained in the desktop GPU market. I wonder what fraction of their revenue comes from graphics cards, rather than AI hardware?

So this is what I received from Amazon UK today... Either Amazon made a very expensive mistake or - as I think- someone has stolen it and replaced the box contents. It didn’t have Amazon box tape on it

Good Lord!
And your first post shows that Amazon was the seller.
I hope that it’s not too difficult getting satisfaction for an almost £1.4k purchase.

I’ve already started the return process. I’ve ordered another one as they are selling fast. Paid on credit card too so I’m legally covered for a refund. Won’t get the replacement until next week.
