Oracle released VirtualBox 7.2.6 today as the third maintenance update in the latest VirtualBox 7.2 series of this open-source, free, and cross-platform virtualization software for Linux, Solaris, macOS, and Windows.
Coming more than three months after VirtualBox 7.2.4, the VirtualBox 7.2.6 release introduces initial support for the upcoming Linux 6.19 kernel, due out on February 8th, 2026, improved full-screen support in multi-monitor setups, and additional fixes for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.8, 10.1, and 10.2 kernels.
VirtualBox 7.2.6 brings quite a few improvements to Linux Guest Additions by fixing an issue where Guest Additions processes were left running on system reboot or shutdown, an issue when user session services weren’t started on old Linux distros, and a VirtualBox build issue with Linux 2.5.52 kernels and older.
Also fixed in Linux Guest Additions is an issue when VBoxService wasn’t started due to an abandoned pid file, as well as the checking mechanism for loaded kernel modules on some old Linux distros.
For Linux hosts, this release also fixes an issue when a virtual machine was not able to start if the host was running a real-time kernel configuration, and an issue where vboxautostart-service failed to start the corresponding virtual machines on system boot.
On top of that, VirtualBox 7.2.6 fixes an issue when a virtual machine process crashed during Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 guest boot, an issue with high CPU usage when a virtual machine was using NAT, and an issue when VBoxManage wasn’t displaying the interface name for FreeBSD guests.
Moreover, this release fixes an issue where a virtual machine couldn’t be started from the command line, fixes an issue when the guest process crashed due to low memory in the system, and fixes an issue when VMX nested-guest VM-entry was checking the wrong VM-execution control bit in the virtual VMCS.
The GUI received some improvements as well in this release by fixing an issue that caused downloading of update files to fail, an issue that caused the virtual machine list to not be properly displayed in the Resource Manager tab, and an issue causing the storage controller type list to be displayed incorrectly.
Among other noteworthy changes, VirtualBox 7.2.6 makes OemTabId configurable using the AcpiOemTabId option, moves the VRDP server, the USB smartcard emulation, and the disk and VM encryption feature to the open source base package, and improves filename checks for drag-and-drop operations.
Several Windows-released issues were fixed as well in this release, so check out the full changelog for more details. Meanwhile, you can download VirtualBox 7.2.6 right now from the official website as binaries for various popular Linux distros, as well as Solaris, macOS, and Windows hosts.
