All major manufacturers seriously consider who leads their brand’s design team, with each new Chief Designer subject to scrutiny based on their previous work. Porsche has just announced a new leader in that department, taking the reins from a multi-decade veteran. P Tobias Suhlmann Takes Over Porsche Design Porsche has just announced a major shift in their design department; long-time chief Michael Mauer is set to be replaced by Tobias Suhlmann. Mauer leaves after two decades of storied work with Porsche, while Suhlmann comes from a three-year stint with McLaren . Reviewing Suhlmann’s body of work reveals a diverse and successful design history. His career began in 2005 at Volkswagen , and during his tenure there, he received credit for helping shape the look of the Touareg SUV and the flagship sedan Arteon . He also collaborated on a Golf GTE Sport Concept, intended as a high-performance plug-in hybrid. He then joined Bugatti , where he was appointed Head of Exterior Design Creative Development. After a year in Bugatti, Suhlmann moved to McLaren for his first stint with the brand. At that time, he was helping out with the Solus GT Hypercar. Interestingly, he then moved to Aston Martin for two years, during which he oversaw the V12 Speedster and the Valhalla. Moving on from Aston, Suhlmann jumped to Bentley , where he penned the now legendary Batur , before again moving to McLaren for one last time. His final works at the Woking outfit include the Artura and 750s. Outgoing chief Mauer’s resume includes the 997, 991, and 992 generation 911s. Not to mention, he was responsible for the designs of the first-ever Porsche Panamera , Macan, and 918 Spyder. Mauer was appointed Head of Design for the entire Volkswagen Group in late 2015, overseeing the extensive VW portfolio of brands such as Audi , VW, and Bentley. The new Chief Design role for Tobias Suhlmann follows Porsche’s transition to a new CEO, Michael Leiters, who, coincidentally, also came from McLaren.
