The political arrangement that has served capitalist liberal democracies for as long as anyone alive today can recall is irrecoverable. In the United Kingdom, the parties that have dominated politics for a century have failed to replenish their intellectual traditions and no longer represent stable social classes. The mists are yet to clear on the two-party system but, somewhere in the distance, a new system of two blocs can be glimpsed.
