Two of the biggest rivals in the tech world just shook hands on a deal to make life significantly easier for IT teams.
Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud have launched a new multicloud networking service designed to make it easier and faster for companies to move data between their platforms. The two long-time rivals announced the jointly engineered system on Sunday, promising private, high-speed connections that can be activated in minutes rather than weeks.
The move comes as demand for reliable connectivity grows. Even short outages can cause major disruptions, as seen during the October AWS outage that knocked major platforms offline and could cost US companies up to $650 million, according to Parametrix.
Rob Enns of Google Cloud summed up the intent behind the partnership, saying the service is meant to help customers shift data and applications “with simplified global connectivity and enhanced operational effectiveness.”
What this collaboration actually delivers
For years, businesses using multiple cloud providers had to manually coordinate physical equipment, routing policies, and long provisioning timelines. Now, the two companies say they’re replacing all of that with a managed, cloud-native experience.
Google Cloud explained in its announcement that the new approach abstracts “the complexity of physical connectivity, network addressing, and routing policies,” allowing customers to provision bandwidth on demand through their existing cloud consoles or APIs.
AWS, in its re:Invent 2025 updates, said the service offers dedicated bandwidth through pre-built capacity pools and “infrastructure that is fully managed by the service providers,” enabling “customers to remove the overhead of managing physical devices or virtual routing objects from their multicloud networks.”
The new service is built with quad-redundancy across multiple interconnect facilities, and MACsec encryption is standard between AWS and Google Cloud edge routers.
Continuous monitoring by both companies is also part of the model, helping reduce downtime and avoid the kind of extended disruptions that shook major online platforms earlier this year.
Salesforce was named as one of the early customers testing the cross-cloud link. Jim Ostrognai, SVP of Software Engineering at Salesforce, said the system helps unify data for AI and analytics.
“Integrating Salesforce Data 360 with the broader IT landscape requires robust, private connectivity,” he said. The new setup, he added, “accelerates our customers’ ability to ground their AI and analytics in trusted data, regardless of where it resides.”
Why this partnership matters
The two companies have historically competed fiercely for market share. AWS remains the world’s largest cloud provider, while Google Cloud is third behind Microsoft Azure. But with AI pushing up demand for compute and bandwidth, cloud customers are increasingly mixing providers, making interoperability a new priority.
Alongside the launch, both companies published an open API specification on GitHub, so other cloud and network providers can adopt the same architecture. Google Cloud said the effort supports its goal of building “an open and unified multicloud experience.”
