What is the Superpower turbine?

Superpower is a 42 megawatt natural gas turbine designed for large, behind-the-meter power needs, especially AI data centers. It packages a high-performance turbine and generator into an ISO shipping container–sized footprint that can be installed and brought online quickly.

Superpower runs in simple-cycle configuration out of the box and can be integrated into a combined-cycle plant for customers who want additional overall efficiency.

Why is Boom building a natural gas turbine?

Power is now a hard bottleneck for modern compute, especially AI. Hyperscalers can source GPUs faster than they can secure reliable, controllable megawatts at the right locations.

Boom already has a world-class gas turbine core in Symphony, the engine developed for the Overture supersonic airliner. Superpower applies that engine architecture to ground power. That does two things at once:

Solves a real power problem for hyperscalers and other large industrial users.

Accelerates Symphony and Overture by funding the engine program and accumulating operating hours on essentially the same hardware.

Superpower delivers new power capacity for AI and industry and a faster path to commercial supersonic passenger flight.

When will the first Superpower be operational?

The first Superpower unit will be delivered to Crusoe in 2027.

Crusoe is deploying Superpower as behind-the-meter generation to power high-density AI compute.

How many Superpower units have been ordered so far?

Crusoe placed an order for 29 Superpower units, which will generate 1.21GW of new energy capacity. Superpower launches with a substantial order book valued over $1.25B.

How much capacity is Boom creating for Superpower?

Boom’s total turbine production is planned to ramp to over four gigawatts annually by 2030.

That adds roughly 10% of capacity to the supply-constrained mid-size turbine market, meaningfully expanding what’s available for large industrial and AI data center customers.

Where can Superpower be used?

Superpower can be deployed anywhere an industrial natural gas turbine can be used.

It is specifically optimized for the demands of behind-the-meter generation for AI data centers, where customers need:

What fuel does Superpower use?

Superpower is designed to run primarily on natural gas, with dual-fuel capability that allows diesel backup. That gives operators resilience in the face of gas supply interruptions and more flexibility in planning for extreme conditions or contingencies.

How fast can Superpower be deployed?

Superpower is designed for speed of deployment as well as power output.

The turbine is packaged to fit in an ISO shipping container–sized footprint.

Once the site has prepared the pad, gas connection, and electrical interconnect, installation and commissioning can be completed in about 14 days.

Compared to traditional custom-built power plants, that means:

Much shorter time from order to first megawatt on the bus.

Less site-specific engineering and construction.

Easier replication across multiple campuses and regions.

How does Superpower perform in extreme heat?

Most turbines lose significant output as outside air temperatures rise, which is exactly when demand and power prices are highest.

Thanks to extreme temperature technology developed for Mach 1.7 supersonic flight, Superpower is engineered to maintain its full 42 MW nameplate capacity even at outside temperatures above 110°F—without needing water, which is often a limited resource. This matters especially in hot regions where many AI data centers are being built.

This means that in practice, customers can meet their needs reliably with fewer Superpower units compared to legacy gas turbines.

How is Superpower controlled and monitored?

Superpower is the all-new turbine built in the digital age, cloud-connected from day one. Out of the box, it supports:

Programmatic control – integration with customer orchestration systems and energy management platforms.

•

Real-time monitoring – access to live telemetry, alarms, and status.

•

Predictive maintenance – Boom monitors turbines 24/7 and can address maintenance issues before they become problematic.

This is a turbine purpose-built for customers who already run their infrastructure through software, dashboards, and APIs.

How does Superpower relate to the Symphony jet engine?

Superpower is built on the same core technology as Symphony, the custom engine for the Overture supersonic airliner.

Roughly 80% of the engine hardware is shared between Symphony and Superpower. The key differences are:

The aero fan used to produce thrust in flight is replaced with additional compressor stages suitable for stationary power.

•

A free power turbine is added to spin a high-efficiency generator instead of producing jet thrust.

That means every Superpower unit shares its DNA, materials, and core architecture with the supersonic engine that will power Overture.

How does Superpower accelerate the path to supersonic passenger flight?

Superpower and Symphony reinforce each other in two important ways:

Shared hardware and engineering. Improvements in the core design, materials, and manufacturing processes benefit both the power turbine and the jet engine.

More operating hours, faster. Ground power systems accrue operating hours much faster than early flight-test programs. That accelerates learning, validation, and reliability improvements for the shared core.

The net effect: a more robust, better-tested engine program and a faster, more credible path to commercial supersonic flight.

Where is Superpower manufactured?

Boom is proud to be building Superpower in the United States out of principally American-made components. We expect to announce the first Superpower production site in early 2026.
