If you’ve spent any time in IKEA hacking circles, you’ve seen the TROFAST desk hack a thousand times.
Two storage frames. One board stretched between them. Maybe a cushion on top for the kids. It’s simple, it’s clever, and it’s been the go-to solution for budget-friendly desks and craft tables for years.
It was so popular, so endlessly replicated, that it practically begged the question: Why isn’t this an actual IKEA product?
Well, now it is.
IKEA just launched an official TROFAST table top that turns this wildly popular DIY into a product anyone can grab on their next IKEA run.
The best part? It comes with brackets designed specifically to attach two frames—no guesswork, no improvising, just instant workspace.

Now, it’s easier than ever to join TROFAST units and create a hardworking, stylish workspace. IKEA rolled out a solid pine work surface and brackets that make it easy to attach two TROFAST frames.

It’s a great solution for a desk or craft area for a younger child. But, of course, it’s only a matter of time until IKEA hackers discover all sorts of ways to make this new arrival work for them.
After all, why stop at two frames? Have a wall to fill? Get an extra table top and join three units. What about doubling up and making a taller version?
It will be lots of fun to see what new hacks come on the scene, thanks to this latest piece. Talk about inspiration coming full circle.
IKEA’s Nod to the TROFAST Desk Hack!
Perhaps these creative hacks provided IKEA with the inspiration for this new addition to the TROFAST collection. What do you think? And while you’re here, get inspired with more IKEA TROFAST hacks.
Ultimate Kid’s Work Station
Kids might be small, but they sure can take up a lot of space when you account for all of the toys, books, craft supplies, you name it. Amy Wolfe @foxgloves_and_wolfe created a wall full of functional storage by making a workstation out of TROFAST bins and frames.
She added a table top in the middle for a DIY desk and mounted more frames on the wall for extra storage. The finished hack is quite impressive.
Amy also decided to add legs to the bottom of the TROFAST frames. This small addition is all you need if you want to take IKEA’s new TROFAST table top and frames and turn them into an adult-sized desk.
LEGO Table and Storage

My son is a LEGO enthusiast, so I understand the need for streamlined storage and building space for the colorful bricks. Otherwise, they get everywhere, and you end up with chaos.
Michelle, creator of That Mommy Blog, hacked two TROFAST frames into the ultimate LEGO zone. She started with a similar concept to IKEA’s new TROFAST table top — she joined two frames using a flat surface.
Her hack does a little more, though. Michelle made her table adjustable, so you can move it to suit your needs. Also, one side is smooth, and one side has LEGO baseplates, providing lots of flexibility for building, drawing, or crafts.

Tim Krieger needed a workstation that could accommodate three kids and a computer. He was inspired by Michelle’s LEGO TROFAST hack and decided he could create exactly what he needed with a little DIY action.
He cut two tabletops to size to create the desk space, adding rails and containers for extra organizing power. The result is a highly functional workspace, loaded with storage, that’s sure to make any homework or project much more manageable.
